Alpha arbutin is a naturally occurring compound that is derived from the leaves of the bearberry plant.  Alpha arbutin works by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme that produces melanin. This can help to lighten dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. It is a gentler and natural alternative to synthetic skin lightening agents such as hydroquinone, which can cause skin irritation, redness, and other side effects.
